Another classic gadget goes up for auction – this time, it’s Britain’s oldest working television, which will be sold at the Bonhams Fine Mechanical Music and Scientific Instruments sale in Knightsbridge, London…

The Marconi TV set was manufactured in 1936 and sold for the princely sum of £100, just three weeks after the very first television transmissions began, reports The Telegraph.

However, the new owner of the set, a Mr GB Davis of Dulwich, would have been extremely peeved after forking out what is equivalent of over £5,500 (interestingly, the Marconi is expected to fetch at least £5,000 at auction), only for the area transmitter to burn down in the Crystal Palace fire, meaning that particular district wouldn’t get a TV signal until 1946.

The Marconi television sports a 12-inch screen and is set into a very fetching cabinet made of walnut and mahogany. It has only been owned by two people since first bought and will be auctioned under Lot 1 on the 19th of April.

You can see the whole details over at Bonhams…good luck if you’re bidding!
